Song Evolution in Molossids

 
Tadarida, Nyctinomops and Eumops are members of the family Molossidae, the free-tailed bats. The Molossidae family has around 100 species that live on every continent except for Antarctica. Except for the species we have studied virtually nothing is known about their vocal behavior. Our main long-term project is to examine songs and/or territorial calls to explore how they evolve and the degree to which they co-evolve with echolocation, social structure and ecology. Thus far we have recorded songs in five species (all songs slowed 6x instead of 8x):
